What is service learning?
Service Learning is a process where students investigate an issue affecting the world. Students then plan an action that they can take that will help support changing the issue, implement that plan, and then reflecting on what they have learned.
What are the requirements of service learning at Mount Mourne?
Students will complete modules on Canvas that lead them through the Investigate, Plan, Action, and Reflection stages of service learning. Students will work on these modules at school on early release days with their service learning advisor. However, the process is longer than can be completed on early release days, so students are expected to work on the modules outside of school as well. It is estimated that students will spend between 15-20 hours on service learning outside of school. Students must log between 15-20 service learning hours per year.
What counts as service learning hours?
Any time a student is working on the service learning modules counts as service learning time. In addition, any time a student spends volunteering outside of school counts as service learning time.
How do students record the time they spend in service learning?
Students have a log in their modules where they should record their service learning time. Any time spent on completing the modules outside of school can be recorded. Any time a student spends volunteering the community may also be logged. Students who are in Crosby Scholars may count their two hours of service as well. Logs do not have to be signed. The log is for the student and advisor to keep track of how much students are working on service learning. At the end of the year, your child's advisor will report how many hours your child completed to Mr. Shinkaruk.
Could a student do more than 15-20 hours?
YES! We love our Mount Mourne students to be involved in the community. We include opportunities to help here on the service learning page and we encourage students to get involved.
Could a student spend all 15-20 hours on the service learning modules?
Yes. The service learning modules are extensive and a student could spend all 15-20 hours working on them. That is ok! Learning about why you are taking action and reflecting on what you have learned is important for our students.
